Richard Carter

I have been working in the construction industry since I was 17 years old. I started as Trainee Building Surveyor at Baily.Garner (BG) as a part of the Chartered Surveyors Training Trust. 

Becoming a Chartered Building Surveyor was all I wanted to achieve. BG afforded me that as I passed my degree in 1999 and then later became qualified in 2000. 

Me being me, I wanted to give something back and soon joined the board of the very same Trust that gave me the opportunity (2002). I continued as a board member and eventually became the Chair in 2011. I held the chair for 6 years providing help support and direction to the next generation of surveyor. I believe I have helped over a 1000 young people into the surveying profession and when I stepped down, I was rewarded by my fellow board members with a Queen’s Honour Nomination (unfortunately not received).

I also led the Chartered Surveyors Trust activities in developing the Trailblazer for the Surveying Degree Qualification. I attended No.10 Downing Street to present this proposal before it became launched. 

During this time, I also enhanced my education and completed a MSc in Project Management in 2005 and later in 2007 became one of the youngest Fellow’s of the RICS. 

Extracurricular activities in surveying awarded me the ‘’Freedom of the City’ and election into the Worshipful Company of Chartered Surveyors. Being very active, I soon became a member of the Court.

I then chose to expand my career role. I had been working as an Equity Partner of Martin Arnold, but in 2016, I elected to sell my stake in the firm to become a shareholder of an SME called Cablesheer Group. The purpose was to expand my knowledge and be on the ‘other side of the fence’ for a period of time. I have since moved back to the surveying world as Director of Frankham Group.
