Millwall Community Trust Hosts EFL Girls’ Cup
On Thursday January 10th, MCT hosted the South-East Regional EFL Girls’ Cup, with school teams having won the right to represent clubs through local tournaments.
The clubs represented were: Millwall, Brentford, AFC Wimbledon, Crawley Town, Southend United, Charlton Athletic, Gillingham, and Queen’s Park Rangers.
After a very competitive set of group games, the semi-finals took place with Crawley playing Gillingham and Southend \playing A.F.C Wimbledon.
Southend played well to beat a strong AFC Wimbledon side 2-0 and Gillingham got through after a dramatic penalty shootout victory against Crawley.
The final was a close affair, with both teams playing some brilliant football, but it was Gillingham, being represented by a team from Rainham School for Girls’, who managed to grab a goal in the final minute to with the tournament and progress to the next round of the EFL Girls’ Cup.
Barry Cooper, Head Coach at Gillingham Community Trust. said: “The girls thoroughly deserved their win, they kept going all the way through.”
Barry praised the tournament for giving all the girls a great opportunity to play, and thanked all of those involved.
Sean Daly, Football Development Manager for MCT, said: “It was fantastic to see all the girls take part in the right spirit, everyone was very professional and represented their schools and clubs very well.
“It was an honour to be asked by the EFL to host this tournament and we look forward to working with them further in the future.”
