Millwall Community Trust is determined to support older people with dementia, mental health difficulties or limited mobility through sports participation. Following on from successfully securing funding through Southwark Council’s Bermondsey & Rotherhithe Neighbourhood funds, Millwall Community Trust are working in partnership with Southwark’s Alzheimer’s Society, the Dockland Settlements in Rotherhithe, and Southwark Council to provide free weekly sports activities for older people in Southwark every Friday morning from 10am to 12noon.

The “just turn up and take part” older peoples’ scheme provides an opportunity for senior people to socialise by discussing headline stories from the weekly Southwark News newspaper over a tea, coffee and biscuits, before and after having fun through taking part in a variety of different sports activities such as bowls, football, golf and cricket.

Millwall Community Trust which is in a unique position to use the power of the Millwall Football Club brand to engage with hard to reach sections of the local community, support older people at the weekly sessions by providing a variety of different sports activities which help stimulate the mind, develop balance and hand-eye co-ordination, and support those who may feel isolated by sociality.

Richard White, community development and health improvement manager at MCT commented: “I personally coach on the weekly Friday morning older people’s session at the Dockland Settlements along with my colleague Steve Rogers, and it has become the session I look forward to the most every week.

“We have developed a positive relationship with the people who attend and we aim to help support individuals with confidence, provide an opportunity to socialise with others and to stay fit and healthy by taking parts in different sports at walking speed.”

The free walking sport for older people's programme in Southwark is an opportunity to meet new people while having fun and may support people with dementia to stay fit and healthy.
