Our back story

The Millwall Community Scheme was established in 1985 as a result of a GLC initiative that offered London football clubs revenue funding to develop links and programmes with their communities. Millwall was the first club that accepted the GLC offer. Millwall Football Club (MFC) offered financial and practical support, access to players and the provision of in-kind resources.

Early in the organisation’s development, funding support came from Lewisham and Southwark councils and a formal management committee was constituted with representatives from those authorities, the football club and local interest groups. Over time, additional funding was secured to secure the employment of additional workers and the project significantly expanded.
