Following the postponement of the original tie between MCT Alternative Provision and Gillingham Independent, thanks to Storm Doris, the rearranged fixture highlighted the quality in both teams. However it wasn’t Gillingham’s day as MCT AP walked away with a victory after beating the Kent side in an amazing 11-3 win.

As joyful and important as the result is, the main aim of this newly founded regular fixture is to allow young participants to thrive in a positive & competitive atmosphere. The spirit shown from the Gillingham Independent’s players highlighted exactly how successful and influential the program is.

Freddie Ruby our Education & Employability Coordinator mentions,

This was a fantastic opportunity for both sides to come together and showcase their ability. Both teams played with Great Spirit. This is feisty fixture that brings out the best in both sets of players and we’ll definitely be playing these guys again soon.

The program itself, “works with young people who are disengaged and don’t have a positive direction in their life” Ruby says. The AP program ultimately aims to use sport as a catalyst to re-engage young people and support them with pathways into future spot careers.
